What to do if you pick on the turns?

Drafting from the turns can be one of the most frustrating spots in fantasy football. Not only do you face long waits between picks, but you also have to plan well in advance to avoid getting sniped over the next 20-plus selections. Whether you’re drafting at the very beginning or the tail end of the first round, it’s crucial to go in with a strategy. With the right approach, you can turn what feels like a disadvantage into an opportunity and maximize the value of your draft picks.

Having a top 3 draft pick

Landing a top draft pick is always a thrill—you get your choice of the elite players and can lock in one of the top fantasy assets for the season. But the challenge comes quickly at the 2nd and 3rd round turn. By the time you get back on the clock, the board can look very different, making roster construction even more important. Ideally, you want to leave the first three rounds with at least one running back and one wide receiver. If you want to take a swing on an elite tight end, you can, but more often than not it makes sense to secure a second running back unless a premier wide receiver has slipped further than expected. If you miss out on grabbing two strong RBs early, you’re likely waiting until nearly the 5th round to find your RB2, which can put you behind the curve.

Drafting at the end of the 1st round

Drafting at the end of the first round does come with some advantages, but it also brings the challenge of those long waits between picks. With back-to-back selections, the best approach early is usually to take the best available players, though it can be difficult to land a true RB1 in the 3rd round—making it tempting to secure a running back with one of those first two picks. The key to drafting on the turn is planning ahead. Between your selections, there will almost always be position runs, and it’s easy to miss out on the top quarterbacks or tight ends if you’re not prepared. Setting clear targets for one or two QBs or TEs and being willing to reach a round earlier than normal can help ensure you don’t get left behind at those positions.
