The New York Jets Case Study

In fantasy football, the focus is usually on drafting the best available players and occasionally stacking teammates, rather than worrying about how good a team is overall. What really matters is how their offense operates. That brings us to this year’s New York Jets. In the offseason, the team brought in Justin Fields to take over at quarterback, a move that adds plenty of uncertainty to their offensive outlook. Fields’ style of play creates a number of challenges for projecting high fantasy production, especially relative to where the Jets’ skill players are currently being drafted.

Garrett Wilson (ADP 35)

Wilson is an elite talent with massive upside, but his fantasy value is directly tied to quarterback play—and that’s where the concern lies. In six starts with Justin Fields last season, only two pass catchers managed to top 60 receiving yards in a single game. While Fields’ mobility is a strength on the field, allowing him to extend plays and escape pressure, it doesn’t necessarily translate to consistent production for his wide receivers. Wilson needs reliable volume to showcase his ability, and that’s far from guaranteed in this offense. Despite that uncertainty, he’s still being drafted ahead of players like Mike Evans, Tetairoa McMillan, and DJ Moore—receivers who find themselves in far more favorable situations.

Breece Hall (ADP 45)

Hall has been the definition of boom-or-bust in recent seasons, and this year could be one of his toughest yet. Last season, it wasn’t until Week 6 that a Steelers running back finally found the end zone—and even then, it was Justin Fields who punched in two rushing scores that same game. With Fields’ mobility and tendency to run near the goal line, Hall is likely to lose a significant number of touchdown opportunities, along with a share of rushing yards and overall carries. Considering you can draft players like James Conner or Alvin Kamara after Hall’s ADP—both of whom have far less competition from their quarterbacks for production—you may feel much more secure going in that direction.

Justin Fields (ADP 109)

Finally, we get to the most complicated piece of the Jets’ puzzle: Justin Fields. In his six starts last season, Fields flashed upside in a few games, but overall it was far from smooth sailing. This year, he’ll have Breece Hall in the backfield, which on paper should help—but in reality, the two are likely to cannibalize each other’s rushing production. Fields’ tendency to pull the ball down and run not only eats into Hall’s workload but also limits his own passing volume, making it hard to count on consistent fantasy output. While I don’t mind taking a late flyer on Fields if he slips in drafts, his current ADP feels far too rich, especially when you can land quarterbacks like Justin Herbert, C.J. Stroud, or even Trevor Lawrence by simply waiting a bit longer.
